Please remember to check the batteries of the smoke detectors in your units regularly. If the smoke detector is beeping, this means that the battery must be replaced. If after replacing the battery, the smoke detector is still beeping, this means that it has expired and the smoke detector itself needs to be replaced. All new smoke detectors have a 10-year life and start to permanently beep after the 10 year period expires to indicate that they must be replaced.
Never remove the batteries of your smoke detectors as this creates a safety problem. Landlords, please check your units regularly and if you find that the tenant has removed the batteries, please re-install them promptly and request that the tenant does not remove the batteries in the future. Smoke detectors save lives.
Finally, fire departments recommend that batteries be replaced with every daylight savings adjustment and to create a habit of using the daylight savings time change as a reminder of checking the smoke detectors when adjusting the clocks.
